Introduction
Dennis Beck
This book is based on one, underlying assumption: All technology use is based on theory.
But how would you define theory? In everyday use, the word “theory” often means an untested hunch, or a guess without supporting evidence. For an educational technologist, a theory has nearly the opposite meaning. A theory is a well-substantiated explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can incorporate laws, hypotheses and facts. A theory is based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through methodical observations and experiments. A well-supported evidence-based theory becomes acceptable until disproved.
So when I say that all technology use is based on theory, I mean that all technology use is based on a well-supported explanation of how people learn that has been confirmed in multiple environments and with diverse populations.
THAT is what this textbook is about!
