10 Creating a Timeline with Primary Sources
Time Requirement: Up to 3 class periods.
After completing lessons about folklore and primary sources, students will create a timeline with primary sources and share details of the folklore narratives they’ve been researching. Students will create a timeline of an event using primary sources. Students will present timeline to class or another group.
Learning Objectives
- By the end of this lesson, students should have a deeper understanding of primary sources, their significance in historical research, and the importance of verifying their reliability.
- They should also have developed skills in analyzing and selecting appropriate primary sources for constructing historical narratives.
Materials:
- Markers.
- Construction or Colorful Paper.
- Rulers.
- Pencils.
- Poster Board/Presentation Fold-Out Board.
Strategies and Activities:
Briefly recap the previous lesson, reinforcing the importance of primary sources and the need for verification.
Research: Students will create a timeline of a specific historical event using primary sources. Provide guidelines for selecting and verifying primary sources. Students should build on primary source research from previous lesson for this activity. Encourage students to select a variety of primary sources to gain diverse perspectives on the event.
Creating the Timeline Draft: Distribute the timeline worksheet and instruct students to organize their selected primary sources chronologically. Encourage students to include brief annotations or descriptions for each source.
Assignments and Assessments
Presentation and Assessment (Group or individual assignment): Students present large timelines of legend or other locally relevant event, place, or tradition. Students will use poster board or presentation board to create timelines that include photos and illustrations and summary of event. Evaluate students based on their participation in discussions, analysis of primary sources, and the completeness and accuracy of their timelines.
