Self-Reflection: Midterm/Final Assessment
Ashleigh Severson
For this Advanced Composition course, self-reflection plays a pivotal role in your growth and development as a writer. As such, you will be tasked with writing two self-reflection essays-one at midterm and the other during finals-which will provide you with an opportunity to critically assess your writing process, progress, and achievements over the duration of the course.
Midterm Self-Reflection Essay
For your midterm self-reflection essay, you will reflect on your writing journey up to the midpoint of the course. Consider the assignments, readings, discussions, and feedback you have encountered in the first half of the semester. You will reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, the challenges you have faced, and the strategies you have employed to overcome them. Additionally, you will assess your progress in meeting course expectations and goals through questions such as: How have your writing skills evolved since the beginning of the semester? and What areas do you still need to focus on for improvement?
Your essay should be a thoughtful and introspective analysis of your writing process and progress up to midterm.
Final Self-Reflection Essay
For your final self-reflection essay, you will revisit your writing journey and assess your growth and development as a writer over the duration of the course. You will use the midterm self-reflection essay as a starting point, addressing the concerns you might have had at the midpoint in the semester and how those challenges changed as the semester progressed. Follow the same critical analysis and assessment guidelines from the midterm self-reflection essay with the entire course in mind. Emphasize how your writing process has changed and how insecurities present in your first self-reflection have been overcome. Explain how you will apply what you learned in this course to your field of study or future courses and jobs.
Note: Self-reflection if an essential component of the writing process, allowing you to gain insight into your writing strengths and weaknesses, identify areas for growth, and set goals for future improvement. Take this opportunity to reflect thoughtfully on your writing journey and celebrate the progress you have made thus far.
